The Old Silk Route between Malaga and Granada
Lots of people go to Spain for the sunshine and the beaches. But Spain is full of wonderful mountain ranges, and is a paradise for hill walkers.
Nature park Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Mountains beside our home village, Canillas de Albaida are part of 12 municipalities, all belonging to the province of Granada and Malaga and are characterized by the beauty of the scenery.

The Old Silk Route is a beautiful route steeped in history. This walk takes you along but only a small part of it (16 km). This track has also become part of the GR7 route through Andalucía and is one of few paths which lead you straight into the heart of the Sierra Almijara Natural Park.
Hiking poles are good aid for steep up and downs. Route level: Moderate

The terrain varies from steep mountain paths to gently descending tracks. The walk starts at Competa or if you want make it shorter, at Puerto del Collado. It begins with a gentle hike for about half an hour. There is a 30 minute relatively steep climb to the silk route where you can also see the fire outlook post that is still in use today.
There are spectacular views, and weather permitting you can see down to Nerja, Frigiliana, Torre del Mar and the Mediterranean sea. Today we could see up to Malaga and lake Vinuela:

Home journey has begun and Competa is on our sight:

FINISH! Back in village Competa and we got our reward...

I can really recommend this walk - it is the most beautiful walk in this area and it is circular route that make it even more fascinating. You might even see some wild goats and eagles.
